Estimates. Every codec here runs at a constant or near-constant rate: intra-frame (ProRes, DNxHD, AVC-Intra, uncompressed) and CBR long-GOP (XDCAM HD422), so these are close. ProRes / uncompressed rates scale with resolution and frame rate; the fixed broadcast rates are quoted at their target format. Sizes use decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes).
How file size is estimated
File size is simply the total data rate multiplied by the duration: bytes = (video + audio Mbps) × 10⁶ ÷ 8 × seconds. The codecs offered here all run at a constant or near-constant rate: intra-frame (ProRes, DNxHD, AVC-Intra, uncompressed) and CBR long-GOP (XDCAM HD422), so the estimate is close. True VBR codecs such as H.264 and HEVC vary with picture content, which is why they aren’t offered as presets here.
Rates that scale
ProRes and uncompressed data rates scale with resolution and frame rate; the fixed broadcast rates (XDCAM HD422 50, AVC-Intra 100, IMX 50, DVCPRO HD) are defined at their target format and don’t change with the resolution box. PCM audio adds channels × 48000 × bit-depth bits per second.
